On behalf of the Government and the people of Samoa, both at home and abroad, it is honour to extend a warm welcome and our deepest gratitude to the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). Talofa and greetings to you all. We are gathered this morning to celebrate a truly remarkable partnership – one that has spanned over the 40 years. While the demands of our respective roles mean we rarely have the opportunity to meet the MSC Management in person, the Government of Samoa wishes to make it known that your support is never forgotten. This four-decade relationship is more than just a business agreement; it is a lifeline for many Samoan families. We acknowledge that this journey has not been without its trials. We are aware of the challenges posted at times by the conduct of some of our seafarers. However, the true strength of a partner is shown not when things are easy, but when they are difficult. We are deeply moved that, despite that, despite those hurdles, MSC has continued to support Samoa, maintaining its trust in the potential and dedication of our maritime workforce. Your commitment to “Samoan Sailors” remains strong, as evidence by your ongoing recruitment and the presence of our crew on your international vessels.Currently, more than 400 of dedicated Samoan seafarers are employed abroad MSC Cruise and Cargo vessels. Their hard work has resulted in an estimated SAT 40 million being injected into Samoan local economy through remittances. This substantial financial contribution underscores the success of our collaboration and highlights the positive impact this partnership continues to have on Samoan community and national economy. A special thank you is also due to the MSC Cruises and MSC Explora Management. While many cruise lines focus their itineraries on Europe, North & South America, and African countries etc.; we are heartened by the MSC’s increasing presence in the Blue Pacific. We note with great pride that this is the second visit of the MSC Magnifica to our shores, following the successful visit of the MSC Poesia in February 2023. These visits represent more than just a beautiful sight in our harbor, they bring “new money” into our economy, providing tremendous boost to our local businesses, artisans and tourism operators. CLOSING REMARKS. The contributions of your cruise ships are vital to the economic well-being of our nation. We value this partnership deeply and look forward to many more decades of collaboration.
