Freedom in Christ, Not Bondage to Law

NO RETURN TO THE LAW Galatians 2:17–18 “But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.” Paul is addressing a misunderstanding. If we are justified by faith in Christ and not by the law, does that mean we are free to live in sin? Does grace make Christ a servant of sin? Paul’s answer is a strong: ABSOLUTELY NOT! Grace doesn’t lead to sin—it delivers us from it. The real problem isn’t freedom in Christ. The problem is returning to what Christ has already fulfilled. Paul says, “If I rebuild what I destroyed...”—if he goes back to relying on the law for justification—then he proves himself to be in the wrong. To return to the law as a means of being made right with God isn’t progress. It’s regression. Christ has already accomplished what the law could never do. To rebuild a system of self-justification is to ignore the sufficiency of Jesus’ work. It is to place confidence back in human effort instead of divine grace. This passage keeps the balance clear—GRACE IS NOT A LICENSE TO SIN. But neither is the law a means of salvation. We are justified by faith—and that faith leads us into a transformed life, not back into bondage. The lesson for us is both clear and corrective—we must not drift into thinking that we either earn salvation or that grace excuses sin. Christ frees us from both error and bondage. We don’t go back. We move forward in grace. Prayer: Father, guard us from returning to any form of self-reliance or legalism. Help us to walk in the freedom Christ has secured, without drifting into sin or striving. Keep us anchored in grace and faithful in obedience. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Have a great week. God bless and lots’a love, Warren
