POLICE PRESS STATEMENT Update on the Death of Ms. Sia Catherine Figiel. The Ministry of Police, Prisons and Corrections (“the Ministry”) acknowledges the concerns expressed by the public regarding the death of Ms. Sia Catherine Figiel while in custody and provides the following update: 1. Following Ms. Figiel’s death, the matter was formally referred to the Coroners Court, which has oversight of the investigation and will make the official findings in due course. The Ministry continues to fully comply with all directions issued by the Coroners Court on 29 January 2026. 2. A post-mortem examination was conducted on 5 February 2026 by a forensic pathologist from New Zealand, who was engaged to ensure independence and transparency in the examination process. 3. The forensic pathologist has now provided preliminary forensic findings, which indicate that the injuries observed are consistent with a self-inflicted death by hanging. The examination identified a single ligature mark consistent with hanging, and no additional injuries were identified that would suggest the involvement of another person. 4. Further testing of samples remains ongoing. A final post-mortem report will be provided to the Coroners Court, which will determine the cause and manner of death in accordance with its statutory role. 5. The Ministry reiterates its commitment to transparency, accountability, and full cooperation with the coronial process. 6. The Ministry extends its sincere appreciation to the forensic pathologist of the Forensic Pathology South Island, Christchurch, New Zealand, for her immediate assistance on short notice and for her ongoing professional support. The Ministry further extends its deepest condolences to Ms. Figiel’s family, loved ones and the wider community during this difficult time. Ma le faaaloalo lava, Acting Commissioner of Police, Prisons and Corrections Services.
