Living What You Preach: No Double Standards

NO DOUBLE STANDARD Galatians 2:14b “‘You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?’” Paul exposes Peter’s inconsistency. He’d been living in the freedom of the gospel—eating with Gentiles, no longer bound by the old ceremonial distinctions. His life had already demonstrated that those laws weren’t necessary for acceptance before God. Yet under pressure, he withdrew. And in doing so, he sent a message that contradicted his own life. He was now expecting Gentiles to conform to standards he himself was no longer living under. This is the danger of a double standard. To live in freedom, but preach restriction. To enjoy grace, but impose law. To rest in Christ, yet require others to perform. Paul’s question cuts through it all: How can you expect others to carry what you yourself have laid down? The gospel leaves no room for this kind of inconsistency. If we are saved by grace alone, then that same grace must be extended to others—fully, freely, and without added conditions. This verse calls us to examine not only what we believe, but how consistently we apply it. We mustn’t place burdens on others that the gospel has already removed. Grace received must become grace extended. Prayer: Father, guard us from inconsistency and double standards. Help us live in the freedom of the gospel and extend that same grace to others. Keep us from adding burdens where Christ has already brought freedom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Have a great day. God bless and lots’a love, Warren
