LOVE AND RESPECT Ephesians 5:33 “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” Paul closes his teaching on marriage by bringing everything into clear focus. Love and respect aren’t optional extras; they are essential expressions of a Christ-centred marriage. Each is called to give what the other most needs, reflecting the gospel in everyday life. For husbands, love isn’t defined by words alone but by consistent, self-giving care. To love one’s wife as oneself is to consider her well-being with the same attentiveness and seriousness given to one’s own. It’s love that protects, listens, and sacrifices. For wives, respect is a powerful expression of honour. It communicates trust, affirmation, and encouragement. Respect doesn’t mean silence or fear, but a posture that builds up rather than tears down, strengthening the bond of unity. Together, love and respect create an atmosphere where grace can flourish. When both are offered freely, marriage becomes a living testimony to Christ’s relationship with His church—marked by devotion, humility, and faithfulness.
