MWCSD Partners with UN Women to Strengthening Safe Markets in Savai’i

2026-02-17 - 01:30

The Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development (MWCSD), in partnership with UN Women, successfully delivered a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awareness Training for market vendors and small business operators at the Salelologa Market, reinforcing Samoa’s national commitment to safer public spaces and stronger communities. The initiative forms part of the ongoing implementation of the Pola Puipui National Prevention Framework, which advances a whole-of-community approach to preventing violence against women and girls and strengthening respectful relationships across Samoa. Empowering Community Frontliners Market vendors — women and men — are at the heart of community life. As frontline service providers and daily leaders within public spaces, they play a vital role in shaping environments that are safe, inclusive, and respectful. Through the training, participants strengthened their understanding of: • The definition and forms of Gender-Based Violence, including physical, emotional, sexual, and economic abuse • The root causes of violence, including inequality and harmful social norms • The social and economic impacts of violence on families, businesses, and communities • Safe and ethical ways to respond, including confidentiality and appropriate referral pathways Photo Credit: MWCSD Facebook Page The session emphasized that GBV prevention is not solely a government responsibility, but a shared societal obligation requiring informed, confident, and compassionate community members. Extending Impact Beyond the Market: Importantly, the knowledge gained extends beyond the workplace. Vendors were encouraged to carry these principles into their homes, churches, villages, and networks — strengthening harmony, dignity, and mutual respect within families and communities. By equipping everyday leaders with awareness and practical tools, Samoa continues to build a culture where violence is not tolerated and support systems are accessible and responsive. Recognising Commitment: The programme concluded with a certificate presentation, acknowledging the vendors’ leadership and commitment to promoting safe market spaces and contributing to violence prevention efforts across Savai‘i. MWCSD extends its appreciation to UN Women for its continued partnership and to the Salelologa vendors for their active engagement and dedication to community wellbeing.
